Privacy
Privacy, in plain words
Aroni is a map of what is happening in Nigeria, built from public sources and from people reporting electricity in their area. This page explains what that means for you: what Aroni keeps, what stays on your phone, and which outside services are contacted when you use a feature.
There is nothing to sign up for. Aroni does not know who you are.
No analytics, no advertising and no tracking cookies. No profile of you is built.
Your area, map choice and device id stay in your browser.
Network addresses are only stored as a scrambled code that changes every day.
The short version
- Almost everything on Aroni is public information that Aroni collects from named sources.
- The only thing you can send Aroni is a light report: your area, light on or off, a random device id and a bot check.
- Your choices are kept in your browser, not on Aroni's servers.
- Some features connect your browser to another service (map tiles, fonts, radio streams). That service sees your network address, as any website you visit does.
- Cloudflare carries every connection to aroni.live.
What stays on your device
Aroni stores these in your browser's local storage. They never leave your phone except as described:
- Your area: the area you last reported light for, so you do not have to pick it each time.
- Base map: Dark, Streets, Sat or Lite.
- Device id: a random code created on your phone. It is sent with a light report so Aroni can count separate devices. It is not linked to your name, number or anything else.
- Saved copy of the site: the app and recently viewed map tiles, so Aroni opens fast and works on a poor signal.
Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it.
What Aroni keeps
Light reports
When you report light, Aroni stores the area, on or off, the time, your device id and a hash of your network address. The hash is made with a secret and today's date, so it cannot be turned back into your address and cannot be matched across days. It is used only to stop one network flooding reports. Individual reports are deleted after 30 days; the on/off history of an area (with no device ids) is kept for 90 days.
Bot check
Each light report passes Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks the browser is not a bot. Cloudflare sees your network address and browser details for this check. See Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy notice.
Server logs
Aroni does not keep visitor logs. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, may process connection data to deliver it and protect it from attack, under its privacy policy.
Admins
The only people with accounts are Aroni's admins, who sign in with an emailed link (Supabase Auth) to remove, approve or add items.
When your browser contacts other services
Aroni gathers most data on its own servers, so your browser talks only to aroni.live. A few features load directly from another service. Each one sees your network address and follows its own privacy policy.
Opening the map
- OpenFreeMap: map tiles and labels.
- EOX (Sentinel-2 cloudless): satellite imagery, when you choose Sat.
- Google Fonts: the typefaces.
Listening to radio
- The radio station's stream server: audio plays straight from the broadcaster. Aroni does not relay it, so the station or its stream provider sees that you are listening.
Reporting light
- Cloudflare Turnstile: the bot check described above.
Following a link
- News sites, TV channels, YouTube, the UN, the World Bank, OpenStreetMap and others: only when you tap a link to them. They then apply their own policies and may set their own cookies.
Gathered by Aroni's servers, not your browser
News feeds, markets (NGX and Yahoo Finance), weather and air quality (Open-Meteo), statistics (World Bank), exchange rates (CBN), radio checks (Radio Browser), contracts, treaties, cables and bases are fetched by Aroni. These services never see you.
Good to know
- Reports are anonymous but public in total. Everyone sees an area's status and counts, never who reported.
- Information is as reported. Security incidents and alerts are read from news headlines. Check the linked sources before acting on them.
- Data belongs to its sources. Each dataset names its source and licence.
- Children. Aroni is a general information site. It does not knowingly collect anything from anyone, of any age, beyond the anonymous light report.
Your choices
- Use Aroni without ever reporting light, and nothing about you is stored.
- Clear the site's data in your browser to remove your area, device id and saved copy.
- Choose the Lite map to avoid loading map tiles from OpenFreeMap.
- Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you can ask what is held about you or ask for it to be deleted. Because Aroni stores no names, include your device id, which you can find in your browser's site data for aroni.live.
